Welcome to Dreamwidth, Tumblr folks!

With the new update to Tumblr's community guidelines announcing that they will no longer permit adult content on their site, we'd like to take a moment to reassure all y'all that we have your backs. With a very few exceptions (such as spam and the like), if it's legal under US law, it's okay to post here. We're 100% user-supported, with no advertisers and no venture capitalists to please, and that means we're here for you, not for shady conglomerates that buy up your data and use it in nefarious ways.

Tumblr's definition of "adult content" seems to be inherently visual, and I also wanted to remind people that we do have basic image hosting. (It's definitely not as slick and easy to use as Tumblr's, I won't lie, but it does exist.) If you want to include images in your posts, you can upload them and the site will give you HTML that you can paste into your entry. Or, if you have post-by-email set up, just attach the image to the end of your email and it'll be posted. All users have a 500MB image hosting quota right now. I know that's small for people looking for a place to host NSFW image blogs, but we are reviewing usage statistics to see if we can increase it, or at least make it possible for people to pay for more quota like you can for more icons.

For those asking whether we have a mobile app: we don't at the moment! There are many (soooooo many) prerequisites that we have to do first, which we've been working on but haven't yet finished, because we're dealing with a lot of systems and architecture decisions that were made nearly 20 years ago by now. (A mobile app would also be subject to the same censorship pressure Tumblr faced -- it's looking pretty good that Apple taking the Tumblr app out of the App Store was the proximate cause of Tumblr's content guidelines change, and Apple is notoriously strict on apps for sites that allow user-generated content -- so even once we have one, it's even odds on how long it'll be able to stay available for certain platforms.) We've been trying to improve the website's experience on small screens in the meantime, and that's an ongoing project that we'll do our best to devote some more attention to over the next few months.

Feel free to use the comments to this post to recommend communities to join and to make new friends, whether you're here for the first time as a Tumblr refugee or have been here since the start (and any range in between). To the newcomers: we're happy to have you join us. Welcome aboard!

(Comment notification emails may be delayed for an hour or two, due to the high volume of emails generated by a [site community profile] dw_news post. This was posted at 2105/9:05PM EST (see in your time zone). Please don't worry about delayed notification emails until at least two hours after that. I also apologize to anyone who gets a notification for this post twice; we're trying to figure that one out.)

Off-topic, but I need help

Hey. I just joined this site today and I want to know does anyone know how to use the Cut/Read More feature? I'm a fanfiction writer but I don't want long walls of text crowding my journal/blog. I followed the instructions provided to a tee, but nothing's working. If someone is familiar with how to shorten the text in posts using the Cut/Read More feature, please comment and let me know. I'll truly appreciate it.

So basically, code that looks like this:

will look like this (link to imgur gallery with two images).

edit: Sorry, this is in the HTML post editor, just to clarify -- I see [personal profile] magnuschase probably has the rich text editor covered! I also want to note that, as with Tumblr readmores, you won't see the cut if you go directly to a post's permalink.

Thank you for telling me about that in your edited post. That's probably why I'm assuming the Cut/Read More feature isn't working. I'm looking directly at my journal/blog, but all I see are long walls of text. I don't know how my journal/blog looks from another viewer's perspective.

FWIW, I checked out your page, and "Library" seems to have a working cut -- the earlier posts don't. Basically, if you're viewing from http://eroprincess.dreamwidth.org, functional cuts should be in action -- it's just the permalink itself, such as https://eroprincess.dreamwidth.org/12345.html, which wouldn't show the effect of the cut.

I'm pretty new myself but I think I figured it out---basically, you write the text within the black dotted lines with a grey background. Be careful, because sometimes it messes up and you end up with a normal grey background with no dotted lines. You HAVE to make sure it has a dotted, black line, otherwise it doesn't work.

I'm going to try this again. I also have my blog's settings on 18+. So whenever I log out and look at my blog, I only see links stating this post contains 18+ content. When I click the link, it sends me directly to my post. I'm going to go in my settings and make my blog sfw and see if it works that way. Something like a 'test drive'.

Yeah, that's an issue and has been for a long time. The cut commands won't even be seen by people who aren't cleared for that level of content. That's why you'll often see long post titles like "Fic/Art: title (fandom, pairing, rating)" so that outsiders have at least some warning before clicking on the "I'm over 18" link.

Edit: tags in DW aren't searchable, so all the info that you put into the tags really needs to go "above the cut" for logged-in users, or in the title for external users.

I think the sensitive content warning overrides/replaces the view of the post.

Hi! First question: are you using the Rich Text Editor posting mode or the Beta Create Entries page?

Because i'm pretty sure it's different between the two, and I only know the Beta Create Entries version.

I'm using both. Just testing to see which one will work the best for me.

+grins+ Okay then!

So you can cut any amount of text. as [personal profile] hebethen put in the text box, that's the code in the Beta Entries page.

Though you don't have to have "lj-cut" in the angle-brackets, that's an old old holdover, you can just say "cut text="whatever" and it will cut everything until you do "/cut" again.

Or if you don't want to do custom cut text you can just do "cut" and not the = and it will do a basic cut for you.

For which I will be eternally grateful. I've been here longer than I was on LJ and STILL use lj-cut and lj-user, to the degree I don't think I can remember the actual non-lj versions! :D

Plus crossposting. I crosspost to my old LJ (even though I disabled comments over there), and it probably goes through better if I use lj-cut...

I tend to use the HTML option because it gives me more control. If you try that, you enter the [cut] command just above the text you want to be hidden and [/cut] after it. You can have several different cut sections, and if you want them to have actual titles you use [cut text="your title here"].

Edit ... and I forgot that commands are automatically deleted in comments. To use the commands above, replace [ with < and ] with >. Sorry about that.

I use the & entities when I need to write < and > for code demonstration purposes -
& lt;

(munged here for the same reason. take out the space after the ampersand)
